Blockchain vs Traditional Databases. Is Blockchain the Future? (the Investigation)

10:54
The Investigation Into Blockchain and Traditional Databases - is Blockchain the Future? What is a database? Database is a collection of information that is organized so that it can be easily accessed, managed and updated. Data gets updated, expanded and deleted as new information is added. The applications are using databases to get information. There are several different types of databases but the main ones are: a) Relational databases are made up of a set of tables with data that fits into a predefined category. Each table has at least one data category in a column, and each row has a certain data entry. b) A cloud database is a database that has been optimized or built for a virtualized environment, either in a hybrid cloud, public cloud or private cloud. c) A distributed database is a database in which portions of the database are stored in multiple physical locations, and in which processing is dispersed or replicated among different points in a network. d) There are also other less known types available. What is blockchain? It's a shared ledger for recording the history of transactions - that cannot be altered. While complex in nature the actual idea behind blockchain is quite simple: a) As each transaction occurs it's put into a block b) Each block is connected to the one before and after it c) Transactions are blocked together. d) Each block is added to the next in an irreversible chain. Blockchains are commonly operated through thousands of global computers in an open peer-to-peer network meaning the data isn't stored in a single location or across a single server They can be public or private depending on the use-cases Distributed database? Blockchain has some similarities to distributed database since the data is kept on several machines. There are also differences though. In a databse users trust all the machines (since they are all in admin control) so the machines are not expected to compromise the integrity of data. On the blockchain, users don't trust any of the machines but expect that over 51% of the computers connected to the network are honest Blockchains in general can also be considered more limited than distributed databases but they also have advantages so it's basically a case of seleting the better tool. Advantages and disadvantages 2 main advantages Robustness: blockchains are usually tamper-proof. Once recorded the transactions cannot be altered. Decentralisation: Require no central administrator since blockchain transactions contain their own proof of validity and their own proof of authorization 2 main disadvantages Confidentiality: every node in a blockchain independently verifies and processes every transaction, there are some solutions to change it like advanced cryptographic techniques but those are exceptions and not a rule Blockchains will always be slower than centralized databases simply due to how they work. Blockchain Usage Bitcoin is the original and the most popular use case for blockchain - it is esentailly used to record transactions on the blockchain. Basically Internet money. Introduction of smart contracts changed blockchain use cases. Smart contract is a computer program that directly controls the transfer of digital currencies or assets between parties under certain conditions. This means that wile Bitcoin is a simple transfer of value with contracts you can do that transfer only if certain conditions are filled. Ethereum made smart contracts popular and opened a whole new different world for blockchain. Currently they are mostly used for crowdfunding but in the future there should be several great use cases that could revolutionise we use computers and electronic devices. Blockchain Based Decentralized Cloud Storage | Crypto Tech

13:51
There are a few companies available that are offering decentralized cloud storage solutions to businesses and end users. One of the main concerns with data storage these days is security, and decentralized file distribution and fragmentation seems to solve that problem. It is still TBD whether all of these available companies will be able to meet strict PCI and HIPAA regulations. We take a brief look at Sia (SC), Filecoin (FIL), and Storj (STORJ) and what they have to offer today as well as down the road.

Blockchain Technology Explained: What is a Blockchain?

04:01
This video https://youtu.be/eXJHPDs4M3Y provides an easy to understand introduction to Blockchain Technology. Please leave comments and questions below the video. Here is the full transcript for your convenience: What is a Blockchain? A Blockchain is a distributed database that multiple parties share and everyone can trust. A Blockchain network provides a mutually trusted, transparent way of sharing and transacting. Each party participating in a Blockchain network maintains their own copy of the database. What makes Blockchain secure? Transactions on the database are atomic (this means that they're processed one at a time). The next transaction will be a different write or a read, but only after the preceding transaction has completed (or failed). Each write to the database is considered a ‘block’. Each new block contains a cryptographic hash (a unique fingerprint) of the previous block, creating a chain that can always be validated by checking the hashes back to the original root block. Before a block can be committed, all participants are required to validate the transaction and provide consensus that the block can be added to the chain. This effectively makes it impossible to add a record unless all parties participating in the blockchain agree the record is valid. Because all records are chained together by their hash value, once committed to the chain, all records are immutable (they cannot be changed). It is impossible to alter a previous record without altering every party’s copy of the chain. If one node is compromised, then it can no longer participate in the chain until it regenerates the true chain from the other participants. How does Blockchain prevent double spending? A major challenge of digitising assets is the potential to spend/redeem/use an asset multiple times. Because digital assets are much easier to forge than many traditional assets (such as currency, tickets, physical coupons, etc.), a secure system is required to ensure that an asset is only used once. With Blockchain, every time an asset is used or consumed, the owner of the asset signs the transfer with a private cryptographic key. This key is unique to the owner and is extremely difficult to forge. In order to initiate the transaction, the transferrer requires both the asset and their private key. The Blockchain will check both the validity of the key, and ownership of the asset. Therefore, even if the asset is cloned, it cannot be used without the private key. Once the transaction has been committed to the chain, the owner of the asset will have changed. This means, each node that receives a second transaction requesting transfer of ownership (or redemption, etc.) will see that there was a previous transaction that already transferred the asset and will reject that transaction. This prevents a second transfer block from being added to the chain. How does Blockchain ensure privacy? Personal data and identifiers are not required to be stored in the chain. Such data is stored as a hash value which provides both anonymity and security. The user may provide data such as their name, telephone number, email address, Facebook account id, unique user name, password etc. (in reality a combination of these values is used) to determine their identity. This data is hashed to provide a unique token that can only be recreated by providing the original values, and only this hash is stored to identify the party in the chain. Since it is impossible to obtain the input values by reverse engineering a hash value, the user is practically anonymous to all parties within the chain. But, they can be validated whenever required by providing the original values used to create the hash. How is PassKit utilising Blockchain? PassKit provides a private blockchain service to parties that wish to issue, record or redeem anything of value. This can be anything from loyalty points, punch card programmes, event tickets, boarding passes, to government identification, insurance policies or claim histories, tax records and educational transcripts. We utilise existing mobile wallet technology as a gateway for transacting, validating or querying our secure, private Blockchain networks. We ensure that mobile wallet content can be validated and trusted in a frictionless, realtime manner, by both consumers and by the businesses and institutions with whom they transact.

Trent McConaghy - BigchainDB : a Scalable Blockchain Database, in Python

43:20
PyData Berlin 2016 This talk describes BigchainDB. BigchainDB fills a gap in the decentralization ecosystem: a decentralized database, at scale. It has big-data performance levels, a querying system, and a permissioning system that supports public and private versions. It's complementary to decentralized processing platforms like Ethereum, and decentralized file systems like IPFS. BigchainDB is written in Python. This talk describes BigchainDB. BigchainDB fills a gap in the decentralization ecosystem: a decentralized database, at scale. It points to performance of 1 million writes per second throughput, storing petabytes of data, and sub-second latency. The BigchainDB design starts with a distributed database (DB), and through a set of innovations adds blockchain characteristics: decentralized control, immutability, and creation & movement of digital assets. BigchainDB inherits characteristics of modern distributed databases: linear scaling in throughput and capacity with the number of nodes, a full-featured NoSQL query language, efficient querying, and permissioning. Being built on an existing distributed DB, it also inherits enterprise-hardened code for most of its codebase. Scalable capacity means that legally binding con- tracts and certificates may be stored directly on the blockchain database. The permissioning system enables configurations ranging from private enterprise blockchain databases to open, public blockchain databases. BigchainDB is complementary to decentralized processing platforms like Ethereum, and decentralized file systems like InterPlanetary File System (IPFS). This talk describes technology perspectives that led to the BigchainDB design: traditional blockchains, distributed databases, and a case study of the domain name system (DNS). We introduce a concept called blockchain pipelining, which is key to scalability when adding blockchainlike characteristics to the distributed DB. We present a thorough description of BigchainDB, a detailed analysis of latency, and experimental results. The talk concludes with a description of use cases. Blockchain Explainer | Real Vision

04:09
Ever wonder what’s going on under the hood with blockchain — the technology that powers cryptocurrencies like bitcoin? In this animation, Real Vision walks you through what blockchain is, how it works, and how it came to be. Watch this full video on the investment opportunities in blockchain, this coming Monday, August 5th, on our website where you can start a 14-day free trial on Real Vision to watch more interviews like this: https://rvtv.io/2LVspaF Transcript: So what exactly is a blockchain? Blockchain is a distributed database that stores information in blocks, what you can think of as a kind of virtual container for data. As new data gets added, additional blocks are created. The blocks are then linked together chronologically to form a sequence of blocks called a chain. As new information gets added, the chains get longer. This method of data storage is called nondestructive, meaning old data never gets erased or overwritten because the previous blocks in the chain remain unchanged. Each new block that is written contains something called a cryptographic hash, a small mathematical fingerprint of the blocks that came before it in the chain, making it extremely difficult to tamper with the data that resides inside the blocks. One of the things that makes blockchain so powerful is its distributed nature. Distributed in this case means that data isn't just stored in one centralized database controlled by a single account or administrator, but across a wide-ranging network of computers called nodes. In fact, the capacity for global networking itself is the very core of how blockchain works. Modern distributed computer networks began in the late 1960s with ARPANET, a precursor of the modern internet, which connected computers at research universities out West. But peer-to-peer networks, which power block train's communication and are so central to its functionality, are a much more recent invention. The first well-known peer-to-peer network was Napster, which appeared in the late 1990s. Napster-- as you probably remember-- allowed users to share music files between their personal computers. Each node-- or independent computer on the network-- has the ability to share data with all of the others without being coordinated by a central computer. To continue with the music metaphor, peer-to-peer networks that power blockchain are like an orchestra without a conductor. Each node is a musician listening to a vast symphony and playing its own music by ear. Okay, so now we know that block chains organize data in blocks, and we know that blockchains can use peer-to-peer networks to distribute and store data all over the world. But how does the blockchain know which nodes have accurate information? In other words, how does blockchain know what data is authentic? If any node can modify the chain, what's to stop a malicious node from trying to fool the rest of the network for its own advantage. That's a problem called consensus; which is really about maintaining agreement on a network. Consensus, as it turns out, is a very old kind of challenge, which mathematicians and computer scientists call the Byzantine General's Problem. What's an ancient general got to do with blockchain? Well, sending out messages between multiple parties and making sure they are valid is a problem that people have been struggling with for thousands of years. Imagine you want to send out a message to your army that says "Attack at Dawn", but your message is intercepted and replaced by your enemy with a counterfeit message that reads "Retreat at Dawn". If that happens you've got a serious problem on your hands. On the battle field and in finance, there are a lot of ways things can go wrong. But here's the headline: blockchain claims to have solved the Byzantine Generals Problem using unique properties of high speed computer networks and massive number crunching power. There are a number of different 'Consensus Mechanisms' that blockchains can use to do this. But to give you can idea of how consensus works here are some of the broad strokes. Participants on the blockchain use their computers to simultaneously solve very hard math problems. When one node successfully solves a math problem, a new problem is generated and all the computers on the network switch from solving the old problem to solving the new problem. Solving hard math problems takes time. But because blockchain keeps full records of al the changes that have occurred, and nothing is ever thrown away, the sequence of answers combined with the times the answers were sent out to all the other nodes on the network, allows the entire network to validate that the data hasn't been tampered with. We've simplified this view of blockchain; there's a lot of wonky math going on behind the scenes but if you followed it along so far, you've probably got a pretty good idea of the general way blockchain creates trust in a distributed network with no single party in charge.

Analyzing Blockchain and Bitcoin Transaction Data as Graph

51:44
Blockchain technology and Bitcoin will potentially revolutionize business transactions. Blockchain offers a robust, decentralized platform for privacy and trust. It underlies the digital crypto-currency Bitcoin, which can be exchanged freely and anonymously, without a central authority. Bitcoin transactions - recorded publicly, provide an invaluable dataset to gain insight into the behavior of digital currency and the underlying Blockchain technology. Blocks, transactions with potential multiple inputs and outputs, and flow of bitcoins between addresses, form a sophisticated real-time graph. This talk details a pipeline used to gather bitcoin transaction data and analyze it with powerful graph cloud database technologies. What is Block chain technology? blockchain big data in the future

05:15
Source video: GO-Science Is blockchain technology the new internet? The blockchain is an undeniably ingenious invention – the brainchild of a person or group of people known by the pseudonym, Satoshi Nakamoto. But since then, it has evolved into something greater, and the main question every single person is asking is: What is Blockchain? By allowing digital information to be distributed but not copied, blockchain technology created the backbone of a new type of internet. Originally devised for the digital currency, Bitcoin, the tech community is now finding other potential uses for the technology. Bitcoin has been called “digital gold,” and for a good reason. To date, the total value of the currency is close to $9 billion US. And blockchains can make other types of digital value. Like the internet (or your car), you don’t need to know how the blockchain works to use it. However, having a basic knowledge of this new technology shows why it’s considered revolutionary. So, we hope you enjoy this, what is Blockchain guide. +++++++++++++++++++++++ See more how to earn bitcoin, tradecoin, mining bitcoin in. Blockchain tutorial 24: Blockchain and miners

07:34
This is part 24 of the Blockchain tutorial explaining what a Blockchain is and what miners are. This tutorial explains the following: - what the blocks are in the blockchain - what data does a block contains - what a block number and block height is - what a genesis block is - what a main chain, side fork or orphaned forks are - what miners are and their purpose - what a coinbase transaction is and how Bitcoins are created - there will be maximum 21 million Bitcoins - what a block reward is - what block reward halving is - what a hash puzzle is In this video series different topics will be explained which will help you to understand blockchain. Bitcoin released as open source software in 2009 is a cryptocurrency invented by Satoshi Nakamoto (unidentified person or group of persons). After the introduction of Bitcoin many Bitcoin alternatives were created. These alternate cryptocurrencies are called Altcoins (Litecoin, Dodgecoin etc). Bitcoin's underlying technology is called Blockchain. The Blockchain is a distributed decentralized incorruptible database (ledger) that records blocks of digital information. Each block contains a timestamp and a link to a previous block. Soon people realises that there many other use cases where the Blockchain technology can be applied and not just as a cryptocurrency application. New Blockchain platforms were created based on the Blockchain technology, one of which is called Ethereum. Ethereum focuses on running programming code, called smart contracts, on any decentralized application. Using the new Blockchain platforms, Blockchain technology can be used in supply chain management, healthcare, real estate, identity management, voting, internet of things, etcetera, just to name a few. Today there is a growing interest in Blockchain not only in the financial sector but also in other sectors. Explaining how Blockchain works is not easy and for many the Blockchain technology remains an elusive concept. This video series tries to explain Blockchain to a large audience but from the bottom up. Keywords often used in Blockchain conversation will be explained. Each Blockchain video is short and to the point. It is recommended to watch each video sequentially as I may refer to certain Blockchain topics explained earlier. ICO Review: ChainLink (LINK) - Decentralized Oracle Connecting Blockchain With Outside Data

07:30
ChainLink has developed oracles that allow smart contract creators to interact with data providers. See updated video (Sep 14, 2017) here: https://youtu.be/q0ad_GGvo5o Full report by Crush Crypto: https://crushcrypto.com/analysis-of-chainlink/ Download the free ICO Guide which contains 6 simple steps for analyzing any ICOs to find the winning projects: https://crushcrypto.com/youtube/ Note: This is not a paid review. We do not offer promotional or advertising services. Our content is based on our own research, analysis and personal opinion. _______________________________________ What does the company/project do? Most smart contracts that seek to mimic/replace securities, insurance and most other financial agreements, will require access to off-chain resources such as data feeds, APIs and any other sort of resource which exists outside of a blockchain network. Oracles are the necessary middleware that provide this access/functionality to Ethereum smart contracts. With oracles, it is possible to provide programmable contracts that do payouts between two parties once certain criteria have been met, without involving a middleman. ChainLink has developed oracles that can allow a smart contract creator a way to interact with different data providers, payment solutions, and the traditional banking system. ChainLink’s LINK Network is the first decentralized oracle network which allows anyone to securely provide smart contracts with access to key external data, off-chain payments and any other API capabilities. Anyone who has a data feed, useful off-chain service such as local payments, or any other API, can now provide them directly to smart contracts in exchange for LINK tokens. ChainLink supports Ethereum, Bitcoin, and Hyperledger. As ChainLink is a decentralized network, users can receive the rewards of decentralization, trust, and immutability from using ChainLink oracle. _______________________________________ What are the tokens used for and how can token holders make money? LINK tokens are used to pay data providers, ChainLink node operators, payment providers, and other online service providers for their services. Smart contract users will compensate the data providers that they use with LINK tokens. The vast majority of smart contracts need external data to execute. Currently, it is very challenging to get these data, which is why ChainLink exists. The token compensation system will both guarantee accurate data in addition to increasing decentralization across the network. As LINK tokens are used as a currency on the ChainLink platform, the more usage the ChainLink platform has, the more valuable LINK tokens should be. _______________________________________ Opportunities - With oracle, blockchain technology and smart contract will become vastly more useful. People would be able to execute different kinds of contracts in a trustless manner. I believe ChainLink’s oracle will help blockchain technology reaching mass adoption. - ChainLink’s partnership with SWIFT, which is used by over 11,000 banks worldwide, allows ChainLink to easily partner with other financial institutions going forward. - The team has been working together in the blockchain space for a few years already and came up with functioning products in their previous venture. - Network effect is present because the ChainLink platform is more useful when it is the go-to source for blockchain data feeds, so that users don't need to go to several sources for different types of data. _______________________________________ Concerns The white paper has not been released yet as of September 1, 2017. However, we don't think this would increase the chance of the ICO being a scam, because 1) if the project is a fraud, they would have released the white paper to make it less suspicious, 2) SmartContract has been around for 3 years and the team has a solid reputation in the blockchain space, 3) they closed the presale and stopped accepting any contributions until the crowdsale begins. _______________________________________ Disclaimer The information in this video is for educational purposes only and is not investment advice. Chile using Ethereum's Blockchain to Track Energy Data

01:20
This video is explaining how Ethereum's Blockchain is going to used by Chile nation to track energy data and how it will support Cryptocurrency. INVEST IN ETHEREUM MINING - https://www.myethermine.com Chile will use Ethereum's blockchain as a way to record energy sector statistics, its government announced Thursday. The National Energy Commission, which is a part of the country's Energy Ministry, said it would commit data to the public ethereum ledger in order to "augment levels of security, integrity, traceability and confidence in the information available to the public," according to a statement. The commission is particularly concerned that its databases can be hacked and manipulated. The ethereum-based approach represents an alternative method for data storage, given that distributing records among a large number of nodes helps to alleviate that concern. The commission has already begun committing some data to the blockchain, including information about installed electricity-generating capacity, average market prices, marginal costs, hydrocarbon prices and compliance with laws requiring that renewables account for a certain share of electricity generation. Following this first stage of the project, known as "Energia Abierta" or "Open Energy," the commission will study the results and share them with other companies and government bodies in the sector.
